I recently found beautiful vintage-style music paper on Amazon, and it’s perfect for Christmas crafts! This versatile paper opens up so many creative possibilities, and Iβm excited to use it to make a decorative holiday sign. Check out the supplies youβll need for this easy DIY project below.
1. Music paper from Amazon
2. Mod podge
3. Paint brush
4. Antique wax by Waverly
5. Brown and red glitter
6. Tacky glue
7. Hot glue
8. X-acto knife
9. One canvas from the Dollar Tree (8βx10β)
10. Giant craft sticks from Walmart
11. Iron
12. Parchment paper
Begin by carefully removing the canvas from the wooden frame. This will leave you with a clean wooden frame, perfect for creating your vintage-style holiday sign.
Once the canvas is removed, arrange the craft sticks on the wooden frame.
After arranging the craft sticks on the frame, securely glue them down. Apply a generous amount of hot glue or craft glue to the back of each stick and press them firmly onto the frame. Hold them in place for a few seconds to ensure they adhere well. Once the glue dries, your base for the decorative holiday sign will be ready!
With the craft sticks securely glued, itβs time to paint a layer of Mod Podge over them. This will create a smooth, adhesive surface for the vintage music paper. Use a paintbrush to apply an even coat of Mod Podge across all the sticks, making sure to cover the entire area. Let it dry slightly until itβs tacky but not fully dry.
Once the Mod Podge is tacky, carefully place the vintage music paper on top of the craft sticks. You can either trim the paper to fit the frame before placing it or apply it first and trim any excess afterward. Press down gently to smooth out any air bubbles, ensuring the paper adheres evenly to the Mod Podge base.
Youβll be adding a craft stick to the top and bottom of the sign.
After placing the music paper, cover it with a sheet of parchment paper. Using a warm iron, gently press over the parchment paper to ensure the music paper adheres smoothly to the craft sticks and eliminates any wrinkles. Move the iron in small circles for a few seconds, being careful not to leave it in one spot too long. This step helps the Mod Podge set and gives the sign a professional, smooth finish.
With the music paper securely in place, use an X-Acto knife to carefully cut along the gaps between the craft sticks. This will create a separated, paneled look, allowing each stick to show individually while keeping the design intact. Take your time with this step for clean, precise cuts that enhance the rustic charm of your holiday sign.
For a vintage touch, paint two additional craft sticks with antique wax. Apply a light, even coat to create a warm, aged effect. Let them dry completely before using them as decorative accents on your sign. These waxed sticks will add depth and a rustic feel, enhancing the charm of your holiday decor.
To give the music paper a more aged, vintage feel, apply a small amount of antique wax here and there across the surface. Use a light hand and dab with a cloth or sponge to create subtle, worn spots. This step adds character and a charming, distressed look to your holiday sign, enhancing its nostalgic appeal.
To complete the frame, glue a craft stick across the top and another across the bottom of the sign, as shown in the photo below. This adds a finished look and reinforces the structure of your holiday sign. Make sure the sticks are aligned evenly and securely glued in place for a polished result.
For a festive sparkle, apply a small amount of tacky glue to the bells and berries on your design. While the glue is still wet, sprinkle glitter over these areas for a touch of holiday shimmer. Tap off any excess glitter and let the glue dry completely to ensure your sparkly accents stay in place. This step adds a beautiful, eye-catching detail to your vintage holiday sign!
I knew from the start that this vintage music sheet would pair beautifully with our set of decorative bells, adding an extra touch of holiday charm! These two pieces complement each other perfectly and will look fantastic displayed together. If youβd like to add these bells to your own project, you can find them on our website by clicking the link below.
You can find the music paper that I used on Amazon by clicking my referral link down below.
For a cohesive, vintage look, I added antique wax to both bells. This gives them an aged finish that enhances their charm and ties them into the overall design of the sign. Simply apply a light coat of the antique wax and allow it to dry, making sure to highlight the details of the bells for added depth.
This DIY project was such a fun and rewarding experience! I hope it inspires you to get creative and try your hand at making your own vintage music paper holiday sign. With a few simple materials, you can create a beautiful piece of decor that adds a touch of nostalgia to your holiday celebrations. Happy crafting!
