How To Make Anything Look Like Vintage Tarnished Silver Using Paint

by blewis | Jan 20, 2025 | Everyday DIY, Home Decor | 21 comments

I love decorating my home with unique items. If you’re part of The Shabby Tree then you already know that I love old tarnished silver. The tarnished silver looks great mixed in with glass and cream decor.
I thought it would be fun to give some simple items that old tarnished silver look. This can easily be done by using paint.
I’ll be using a black chalk paint, tin metallic paint and a antique bronze paint for this diy.
The first step is to paint your item using the black chalk paint.
This might take two coats with drying time in between each coat.
Once the black chalk paint is dry you’ll then add the tin metallic paint.
I applied the tin metallic paint by using a paper towel.
Once the tin metallic paint is dry you’ll then add some of the antique bronze metallic paint.
Once the paint was dry I decided to give my container a coat of a mod podge sealer.
I used E6000 glue to attach a bling embellishment to the top of my lid.
This was such an easy diy and looks great displayed with my tarnished silver. I hope this will inspire you to get creative and give something a fun makeover to give it a unique look.

Neat idea, but would the tin metallic paint work alone if you don’t want the tarnish look? Thinking shiny tins to hold gifts, jewelry, etc.?

This is a great idea! I am excited to try this on a piece while still seeking out a thrifted piece of silver. Will have to pick up the tin and antique bronze paint.
