Light Up DIY Book Box

by blewis | Feb 11, 2025 | Everyday DIY, Home Decor | 17 comments

We’re always creating decor items for all seasons and holidays here at The Shabby Tree. I want to get creative and create a fun light up decoration that would be great for Spring and Easter.
You can find a list of supplies that I’ll be using for this diy down below.
1. One cardboard book box
2. Two wooden crosses from Walmart
3. Hot glue
4. Doilies from our website
5. Ribbon
6. Flowers from our website
7. Moss mat
8. Scrap piece of lace
9. Magnetic sheets
10. Battery operated lights (20 count)
The first step is to cover the book box with the moss mat. You can find some of the items we’re using on Walmart by clicking my Walmart storefront down below.
https://walmrt.us/41rF3od
The first step is to separate the box from the bottom.
The next step is to glue the moss mat onto the book.
Be sure to fold the book over so the book will be able to be closed after the moss is glued in place.
Once you have the moss glued to the sides you’ll then want to glue it to the top and bottom part of the book.
Once the moss is glued in place you’ll then glue the box part back down.
I glued some ribbon onto to the book to help tie the book shut.
Once the ribbon was added I then glued on some doilies.
The next step is to remove the hooks that are on the crosses.
You’ll want to cut the center out of one cross. I used an x-acto knife for this part.
Once the center was removed I then glued a piece of lace to the front of the cross.
Once the lace is glued you’ll want to trim around the edges.
The next step is to glue pieces of the magnetic strips to the back side of the cross.
Once you have the first cross done you’ll then add the magnetic strips to the front of the second cross.
Once you have the magnetic strips glued in place you’ll then glue this cross to the top of the book.
I decided to add a little moss to the outer edge of the cross.

I added a little moss to the outside edge of the second cross. You’ll want to place the lace cross on top of the cross that’s on the book. I decided to add a few flowers to the top corner of the book.
You can find the flowers that I’m using on our website by clicking the link down below.

The last step is to add lights. I’m using a 20 count battery operated lights from our website. You can find these lights by clicking the link down below.

You’ll want to add the box to the lights inside the book.
I brought the lights up through the flowers and then taped the lights into the cross.
You’ll want to place the lace cross over the lights. This turned out amazing and will look great any where in your home.
I hope you’ll get creative and give this diy a try.

Love it! I love Friday Night Hangouts! It’s my wedding anniversary and I have been told that my gift is a peaceful weekend to myself while my husband and boys go ice fishing. Really looking forward to this Friday’s hangout so I don’t have to be alone.
