I always say, you never know what you’ll find at the thrift store—and this project is the perfect example. Tucked on a lower shelf, I spotted an old metal chafing dish base that most people would’ve walked right past. But around here, we like to see things not for what they are… but for what they could be.

With just a little vision (and a few supplies I already had on hand), I gave this forgotten piece a brand-new purpose—as a unique home decor tray. It’s a simple project, but the transformation feels like magic. This is truly one of those “trash to treasure” moments, and I’m excited to walk you through exactly how I brought it to life.

Here are the supplies I used:

1. A vintage metal chafing dish stand

2. A silver tray from the Dollar Tree

3. Gorilla Glue

4. Black Spray Paint

5. Grecian gold rub ‘n buff

I started by taking the chafing dish base and a silver tray I picked up from Dollar Tree outside, then gave them each two coats of spray paint—allowing time to dry between layers.

Once both pieces were completely dry, I applied Gorilla Glue along the upper rim of the chafing dish base.

I carefully placed the Dollar Tree tray on top, making sure it was centered and aligned before pressing it into place.

Next, I wanted to bring out some of the details and give the piece a vintage feel, so I added a touch of gold to highlight the raised accents.

With everything painted and glued in place, the tray was finished—and honestly, I couldn’t believe how elegant it looked. You’d never guess it started as a thrift store chafing dish!

To give it a seasonal touch, I added a candle ring and placed a chunky candle right in the center. Just like that, it became the perfect little fall accent. The mix of gold details and soft candlelight gives it a warm, cozy feel—great for a coffee table, kitchen counter, or even an entryway. It’s one of those simple pieces that quietly pulls a whole space together.

This project is a perfect reminder that with a little creativity, even the most unexpected thrift store finds can be transformed into something beautiful. I love how this chafing dish turned decor tray adds character and charm to my fall setup—and the best part is, it didn’t cost much at all.
