When you’re a crafter you are always trying to find different ways to be creative. We have been creating a lot of fun and unique items out of cardboard here at The Shabby Tree. If you are following The Shabby Tree then you already know that I love to keep artificial trees up all year long. I want to create a 3D cardboard star that can be used as a tree topper.
The supplies I will be using are:
1. One large piece of cardboard
2. Box cutter
3. Scissors
4. Ruler
5. Marker
6. Hot glue
7. Spray paint (Carmel color)
8. Gel Stain (walnut color)
You will need to cut two squares out of the cardboard. These squares can be any size that you want. I will be cutting out two squares that are 12×12.
The next step is to mark your center point and then draw two lines as shown up in photo above.
You will then draw two lines corner to corner as shown in photo up above.
Once all your lines are drawn on both square pieces of cardboard you will then score the lines using the box cutter.
You will cut each line with the box cutter but be sure not to go all the way through the cardboard.
You will now want to mark about three inches up on the first two lines that you drew.
You will take the scissors and cut these four lines up to the 3 inch mark.
Here comes the tricky part. You want to take the sides and fold them into the crease line. The crease lines are formed from bending the cardboard on the lines that your scored with the box cutter.
Once you have all the sides folded you will then add the hot glue to hold them together.
This might take some time and patience but it will be well worth it.
It is now time to glue your two pieces together.
I added hot glue to the back side of one of the pieces.
You will then place the second piece on top as shown in photo above.
I added a few clamps to help secure the pieces together until the hot glue was good and dry.
Once the star was securely glued together I then went outside and added the spray paint and stain.
This star takes a little patience to make but turns out amazing. You can hang this star or use it as a tree topper. This star can also be created out of paper or the aluminum cookie sheets from the Dollar Tree.
I hope you will get creative and give this a try.
