DIY Air Dry Clay Snowman

by blewis | Oct 2, 2024 | Christmas/Winter, Holiday | 36 comments

The holidays are quickly approaching and I’ve started thinking about my Christmas decor. I want to do a fun snowman theme this year which got my mind thinking. After going through my craft supplies I came up with a way to make a fun and easy snowman using air dry clay.
You’ll find a list of the supplies that I’ll be using down below.
1. One pack of air dry clay from Walmart
2. Wood burning tool
3. One large plastic ornament from the Dollar Tree
4. One small plastic ornament from the Dollar Tree
5. Hot glue
The first step is to use the wood burning tool to cut an opening at the top of the large ornament.
Once you have the top opening cut you’ll then place that opening down to be the bottom of the snowman. The next step is to cut another smaller opening at the top of that ornament.
Once you have the opening on the top you’ll then place the next ornament on top as shown in photo below.
I used some hot glue to secure the two ornaments together.
The next step is to use the wood burning tool to create the eyes, mouth and button holes down your snowman. I did burn a hole for the nose but I would say skip that.
The last step is to cover the snowman with the air dry clay.
I used my fingers to add the clay and smooth it out. You can dip your fingers in water to help give the clay a smooth finish.
I used a wooden kabob stick to poke the holes as shown in photo above.
I formed the shape of a hat with some of the air dry clay. This will take a day or two to fully dry.
I added a small puck light to have my snowman light up.
This snowman will look great any where in your home. I hope you’ll get creative and give this a try.

Cute! Question? Do you have to make holes in the plastic for the eyes, ets. Or just in the clay? If you make holes in the clay, won’t the light shine through the plastic without putting holes for the eyes and buttons? I often try to think of ways to make smaller versions as my space is more limited.

    Hi, Barb!
How do you think up such cute ideas? When I read you were going to do a snowman there this Christmas, it occurred to me that perhaps you’re going through a white decor phase, with all the cute ghosts for Halloween, and a winter wonderland of snowmen for Christmas. Both spectacular ideas!

Adorable!!! I’m trying to think what I could use instead of the ornament as we don’t have a $ store. Any ideas.
