DIY Americana Angel Using A Wet Mop

by blewis | May 22, 2025 | Red, White, & Blue | 39 comments

I started decorating for summer which means I started pulling out my Americana decor. We seem to love angels here at The Shabby Tree so I thought it would be fun to create an Americana angel. This angel will be great to add to all of my other Americana decor.
You can find these list of supplies that I’ll be using for this angel down below.
1. One all purpose wet mop refill
2. Fabric pieces in red, cream and star print
3. Hot glue
4. Two small doilies
5. Small dowel
6. One wire hanger
7. One 3.8” styrofoam ball
8. One gold crown from Totally Dazzled
9. Lace ribbon
10. One small star bling embellishment
You can leave your mop white or coffee stain it. I like to pour instant coffee in warm water and dip the mop into the mixture. You can add as much instant coffee as you want. The more coffee the darker the stain will be.
The next step is to add the dowel to the styrofoam ball. I added a little hot glue to help secure the dowel in place. Your dowel can be as thick as you want and as long as you want. I find small dowels in Walmart.
The next step is to rip strips of the cream fabric. I’m using a muslin fabric but you can use any type of fabric for this.
Once you have the strips you’ll start wrapping them onto the styrofoam ball.
You’ll want to add a little hot glue as you wrap the strips around the styrofoam ball. Once I had the cream fabric in place I then added some lace ribbon.
The next step is to add the doilies to the dowel.
I cut the center opening of the doily to fit the dowel through. You can find doilies that I’m using on our website by clicking the link down below.
https://theshabbytreeboutique.com/pack-of-5-crochet-doilies/
Once I had both doilies in place I then added the mop. You’ll want to cut a hole in the center of the mop to slide the dowel through.
You can use the strands of the mop to help secure the mop tight around the dowel.
Be sure to add some hot glue to help hold the mop flush against the dollies.
The next step is to make the wings to the angel. You’ll want to form the wire hanger into the shape of angel wings.
Once you have the shape of the wings you’ll want to trace them onto the star fabric. Be sure to have your fabric with the back side facing out when tracing the wings.
Once the wings were traced I then folded the fabric in half and cut them out. Folding the fabric in half and then cutting the wings out will allow the wings to both be the same size.
The next step is to glue the wire hanger and fabric pieces all together.
I decided to cut the top hook of the hanger off. You can bend the small top piece to create a small hook for hanging.
You’ll want to add hot glue to secure the wings to the back side of the angel.
Once you have the wings in place you’ll then rip strips of the red fabric.
You’ll want to cut your strips into 5 inch strips. I did not count how many strips I cut. You’ll want to add as many strips as you want.
You’ll randomly knot the red fabric strips to the mop strips.
I decided to braid some arms for my angel. I took 3 strips each having 3 strips of the mop and braided them together.
I brought both arms together and tied them together.
I added a little hot glue to secure the crown to the head. This angel turned out so cute and will look great any where in your home. I hope you’ll get creative and give this angel a try.

She’s so pretty and patriotic! I would love her!
I have a Halloween ghost made from a mop. It’s probably 30 years old and still looks like new. Guess it’s time to add to my mop head collection. lol

Love the body but think I would cover all the head with lace or maybe leave small openings for eyes, nose and mouth. Hair might be a nice addition but is not really needed. Great craft for July 4.

I loved everything about this angel. Then came the crown . I didn’t understand the crown…I don’t like it I would have liked it better with some braided braids in her hair…….I love the angel except for the crown I would have done that differently. ….
