DIY Christmas Ornament Pocket Using Cardboard

by blewis | Oct 14, 2026 | Christmas/Winter, Holiday | 0 comments

Christmas is quickly approaching and I thought it would be fun to create a decorative ornament with a pocket. This ornament can be made any size that you want. You can find the supplies that I’ll be using for this ornament down below.
1. Cardboard
2. Fabric
3. Surebonder fabric glue
4. Silver tinsel
5. Scissors
6. Silver pipe cleaner
7. Box cutter or x-acto knife
8. Marker
9. Paper for a pattern
The first step is to create a pattern for your ornament. You can make this ornament as big or as small as you want.
With the paper folded in half my ornament is about 8.5” wide.
The length of my ornament is about 17.5” long.
The top part of the ornament is about 1.5” by 2.5”. This will be the part that you’ll be adding the tinsel to.
Once you have your pattern created you’ll then trace it onto the cardboard.
You’ll want to use a box cutter or an x-acto knife to cut out the ornament.
The next step is to trace the ornament onto your fabric.
Once you have the ornament traced onto the fabric you’ll then cut the fabric.
You’ll want to place the fabric onto the cardboard ornament and use the surebonder fabric glue to secure it in place. I added the glue going around the edges.
You’ll want to be sure to add the glue going completely around the ornament.
The next step is to create a pocket using a second piece of fabric.
You’ll want to fold the top part of the fabric over about 1.5” to give it a finished edge. I used the surebonder fabric glue to hold the fold in place.
You’ll want to decide how low you want your pocket placed onto the ornament. Once you have the second piece of fabric in place you’ll then add the surebonder glue going around the edge to secure the fabric in place.
Once the second piece of fabric is glued in place you’ll then flip the ornament over and cut off the excess fabric.
You should now have a pocket on your ornament.
The last step is to glue the tinsel to the top part of the ornament.
You can use the silver pipe cleaner to create a hanger for the ornament.
You can fill your pocket with some greenery or a fun sign like I did. This ornament will be fun to add any where in your home. I hope you’ll get creative and give this ornament a try.
