If you love the look of the old red barns then you will love this DIY. I wanted to create a large red barn that I can set on my fireplace place mantle and I want it to look like wood. We have recently used foam board to create faux wooden items which turned out amazing. I know we can easily create a barn using 3 pieces of foam board from the Dollar Tree.
The supplies I will be using are:
1. Three sheets of foam board from the Dollar Tree (2 black sheets and 1 white sheet)
2. Box cutter
3. Scissors
4. Hot glue
5. Ink pen
6. Paint brush
7. Red paint
8. Sanding sponge
9. Long ruler stick
The foam boards measure 29 1/2 inches long. I cut both black foam boards to measure 28 inches. It is best to use the box cutter for cutting down a straight line.
Once you have both black foam sheets cut 28 inches long you will then mark lines every 4 inches apart. You will be marking your horizontal on one board and then vertical on the other board.
You will want to use an ink pen and you will want to be sure to push down and create an indention as you draw your lines.
The top of the barn will be the sheet if foam board that has the horizontal lines. I cut off one of the 4 inch sections with the box cutter.
This 4 inch strip will be used to attach the two foam boards together and it will create the look of a beam going across the barn.
Place both foam boards together and glue the 4 inch strip on top of the seam where both boards meet together.
You will place a small mark at the center of the board with the horizontal lines. This is the top part of the barn. Use the ruler stick to cut from the center point to the corner of the top beam.
Once you have the shape if the barn you will add the red paint.
You will want to let some of the black show through. This will give you a more rustic barn look.
I then cut one inch strips of the white foam board.
You will want to glue the white strips to the top of the barn as shown in photo above.
I then used the box cutter to cut the ends.
I cut small strips of the white foam board to create a barn door.
I used a small peel and stick command strip to attach a small wreath to the top of the barn. You can create this barn as big or as small as you want. Walmart has a small white metal truck that looks so good with the barn. I hope you will get creative and give this a try.
