How To Make A Flag Out Of Cardboard

by blewis | May 9, 2025 | Holiday, Red, White, & Blue | 10 comments

I started decorating for Summer which means I started pulling out my Americana decor. After looking through my Americana decor I thought it would be fun to make a flag out of cardboard.

You can find the list of supplies that I’ll be using down below.

  1. One large sheet of cardboard
  2. Hot glue
  3. Mini cutter from Walmart
  4. Apple Barrel acrylic paint from Walmart ( English Navy, Antique Parchment and Cardinal Crimson)
  5. Wooden stars ( 4.5 “)
  6. Gold glitter
  7. Tacky glue
  8. Paint brush
  9. Warm Caramel colored spray paint by Rust-oleum
  10. Waverly antique wax

The first step is to make the strips for the flag. I made marks one inch apart going down the cardboard to create 13 strips.
I used a yard stick to draw the lines across the cardboard.
Once I had the lines drawn onto the cardboard I used my new cutting tool to cut the strips. This is an amazing tool that I purchased from Walmart. You can find this tool by clicking my link down below.

Once I had the 13 strips cut I then pulled off some of the top layer of the cardboard here and there.
I used extra strips of cardboard to secure my 13 strips together.
Once I had the strips all secured together I then spray painted them with the Warm Caramel spray paint.
Once the spray paint was dry I then added some of the Waverly antique wax.
Once the antique wax was dry I then added the acrylic paint.
The last step is to add the gold glitter to the wooden stars.
You can find these wooden stars on our website here: https://theshabbytreeboutique.com/4-5-wooden-primitive-stars-set-of-2/
The last step is to glue the stars in place.
This was so easy to make and will look great any where in your home. I hope you’ll get creative and give this a try.
