Wooden Tray Makeover

I found myself in our local Dollar Tree which is now a Dollar Tree Plus. Because my Dollar Tree is now a Dollar Tree Plus it has items that range from $1.25 to $5.00. I found some amazing wooden trays for $5.00 that I just know we can get creative with. These trays can be used for a variety of things but I want to change them up and turn one into a fun and unique container.

The supplies I will be using are:

1. One wooden tray from the Dollar Tray ( 15”x11”)

2. Staple gun

3. Hot glue

4. Scissors

5. Paint brush

6. Maple colored gel stain by DecoArt

7. One dish towel ( the dish towel that I’m using is from our website)

The wooden tray was $5.00 from my Dollar Tree Plus.

I pulled one of the handle ends off of the tray. This is very easy to do and did not require any tools.

Once I removed the handle piece I then added some hot glue to the groove on each side of the tray. This will help secure the side pieces in place.

The next step is to paint the tray. You can paint the tray any color that you want. I will be using a walnut colored gel stain by DecoArt on my tray.

You will want to completely cover the whole tray.

Once The tray is painted it is then time to add the dish towel.

I am using a dish towel that is from our website but you can use any type of dish towel or material that you want.

I will first add hot glue to the handle part of the tray as shown in photo below.

I pressed the end of the towel onto the hot glue. This will secure my towel in place to continue attaching the towel onto the tray.

I want to double layer the towel so I cut a small section of the other end of the towel off. This is optional but I feel that if I use the whole towel it will have more support.

I added one staple around each corner area and then I cut the remaining small piece off as shown in photo below.

I did this to both sides of the tray.

You will want to be sure to pull the towel tight and add staples to each side of the tray.

I trimmed off the excess towel going down each side of the tray.

I drilled two small holes on the back to add a piece of wire for hanging.

This is very easy to make and can be used so many different ways. It can hold mail or papers but I love it for flowers. I think this would make a fun and unique decoration for a front door filled with artificial flowers.
