Burlap Bag Scarecrow: A Rustic Fall Craft

by blewis | Jul 29, 2025 | Holiday | 8 comments

Fall is right around the corner and I thought it would be fun to create a small decorative scarecrow. I want a small scarecrow that can be used on my tiered tray.
This scarecrow will be quick and easy to make by using a small burlap bag.
You can find the supply list down below.
1. One small burlap bag
2. One wooden spool
3. Hot glue
4. Poly-fil
5. Acrylic paint ( black, orange and ivory)
6. One sheet of brown felt
7. Fabric flower
8. Raffia
The first step is to glue some of the raffia to the top of the wooden spool. You can find the wooden spool on our website by clicking the link down below.

The next step is to add some poly-fil to the small burlap bag.
Once you have the poly-fil added you’ll then place the bag onto the spool as shown in photo above.
You’ll want to cut the small knot off of each side of the bag.
Once you have the knots cut you’ll then pull the strings to tie the bag tightly around the spool.
Once the bag is secured in place you’ll then want to add raffia to the top. You’ll add some hot glue and then place the raffia over the hot glue.
Once you have the raffia glued in place you’ll then make a hat out of the felt.
You’ll want to cut the felt in half and then add hot glue down the sides of one piece.
Once you have the sides glued you’ll add some poly-fil and then place the hat on top of the burlap bag.
Be sure to add some hot glue to secure it in place. The next step is to trim the raffia.
If your hat seems to be too wide then you can trim the sides before adding the brim to the hat. You’ll want to cut two strips of felt to create the brim.
You’ll want to add some hot glue and add the felt strips.
The last step is to add the flower and paint on the face. You can find the flowers that I used on our website by clicking the link down below.

This scarecrow will make a fun Fall decoration. I hope you’ll get creative and give this scarecrow a try.
