If you’re following The Shabby Tree then you already know how much I love having a variety of lights throughout my home. We’re always getting creative here at The Shabby Tree and I thought it would be fun to create a light up church using foam board.

The supplies that I’ll be using are:

1. One sheet of black foam board

2. X-acto knife

3. Hot glue

4. Drill with a one inch hole saw drill bit

5. Lace colored chalky finish paint by DecoArt

6. Oak colored Gel stain by DecoArt

7. Paint brush

8. One 5 watt clip light

9. Six jumbo craft sticks

10. Two small craft sticks

11. One wooden box from the Dollar Tree

12. Scissors or some type of cutters

The first step is to create a pattern for the church. I’m using a piece of shipping paper that I folded in half. I came down at a slant from the center about 3 inches as shown in photo above.

I then came down about 4 inches as shown in photo above.

You’ll then come out at a slant again about 4 1/2 inches as shown in photo above.

You’ll come back down about 8 inches and then come across. You should now have something that looks like the photo down below.

You’ll cut out your pattern and lay it onto the foam board.

You now need to make another pattern for the front piece of the church.

Fold another piece of shipping paper in half and place it at the center of the previous pattern.

Make a mark about 5 1/2 inches up.

Come out about 4 inches at a slant.

Come back down and you should have you see in the photo above.

You need to create an arch. I came out about one inch from the fold.

Once you have both patterns done and cut out you’ll then trace them onto the foam board.

You’ll use the x-acto knife to cut both pieces out.

Be sure to trace the arch opening onto the bigger piece and cut it out.

Paint both pieces with the chalky finish paint.

I added a little water to the Gel stain and painted over the chalk paint.

I also painted the wooden box and the craft sticks with the Gel stain.

I drilled the hole onto the backside of the box and I drilled it towards the top.

You’ll glue both foam pieces together as shown in photo above.

You’ll cut the craft sticks to the size that you want and glue in place.

You’ll cut the craft sticks to the size that you want and glue in place.

I glued a piece of a craft stick to one of the openings on the side of the wooden box. This will prevent the light from coming out through the hole.

I broke the other side of the box off.

I added hot glue to the box and placed it onto the back side of the church.

You’ll add the clip light to hole in the box.

You’ll create a small cross to add to the top of the church using the smaller craft sticks.

This was very easy to make and will look great any where in your home. I hope you’ll get creative and give this a try.
