DIY Light Up Jack O Lantern Using Spackle

by blewis | Jul 21, 2026 | Fall/Halloween | 1 comment

Fall is right around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about your decorations. I love light up decor and I love to make most of my decor. After looking through some of my Fall and Halloween decorations I decided to make a light up Jack O Lantern. This diy will mix in great with my decor.
The supplies that I’ll be using are listed down below.
1. Set of 2 canvases ( mine are 11”x14”)
2. Lace
3. Hot glue
4. Box cutter
5. Acrylic paint ( sky blue, burn orange and cadmium yellow)
6. Bowl and water
7. Waverly antique wax
8. One brown paper lunch bag
9. Spackle
The first step is color the lace with the yellow paint. I mixed the paint with water and then dipped in the lace.
The next step is to make a pattern for your jack o lantern. I used a large sheet of paper and cut it the same size as my canvas. Fold the paper in half and cut out the shape of a pumpkin. Once you have the pumpkin cut you’ll then draw on the face.
Once you have the face drawn onto the paper you’ll then want to cut it out.
Once you have the face cut out you’ll then trace the pumpkin onto the canvas.
Once you have the pumpkin traced onto the canvas you’ll then use the box cutter to cut out the face.
The next step is to add paint to the canvas going around the pumpkin.
The next step is to create the stem for the pumpkin. You’ll want to cut both ends off of the brown paper bag. Once you have it cut you’ll want to twist one end of the bag.
I decided to add a piece of wire to the bag to help shape the stem. This is an optional step.
Once you have the stem shaped you’ll want to add the Waverly antique wax and then glue the stem to the canvas.
The next step is to add the orange paint to the spackle.
I did not measure how much spackle or paint I used. I mixed in the paint until I got the color orange that I wanted.
The next step is to add the spackle to the canvas. You’ll want to cover the entire pumpkin with spackle. Once the spackle is added you’ll need to set it aside to dry.
Once the spackle is dry you’ll then glue the lace to the back side of the canvas.
Be sure to pull the lace tight when glueing it in place.
Once you have the lace glued in place you’ll then add lace to the outside of the frame.
The next step is to add the second canvas on top of the glue.
You’ll want to cut a small hold into the bottom corner to add battery operated lights.
You can find the lights that I’m using by clicking the link down below.

This light up Jack O Lantern is so easy to make and will look great any where in your home. You can paint the canvas any color that you want.
I hope you’ll get creative and give this DIY a try.
