Dollar Tree DIY Wooden Block Lantern

by blewis | Mar 26, 2025 | Everyday DIY, Home Decor | 39 comments

It’s time to start adding some decor to my front porch for the Summer. I always like to have a variety of lights on my front porch. I thought it would be fun to make a lantern for my porch out of some Dollar Tree wooden blocks.
The main supplies for this lantern are two packs of the tumbling tower game from the Dollar Tree, hot glue and a glass vase.
My glass vase is from Dollar Tree.

The first step is to place the wooden pieces going around the vase.

You’ll keep adding the wooden pieces going up the vase. I added some hot glue to the ends of each wooden pieces.

Be sure to glue your pieces so that you can slide the vase out.

Once you have the wooden pieces all glued in place you can then spray paint it. Be sure to remove the glass vase before spray painting the wooden lantern.

I decided to spray paint mine black.

I decided to give my glass vase a stained glass look. I’ll be using Glass Plaster and colored pigments from WoodUbend for this step.

You’ll want to mix a small drop of the colored pigments to some of the Glass Plaster.

I painted the mixture onto the inside of the vase.

Once I had the glass vase painted I then decided to add a wax to the wooden lantern.

I mixed a wax and pale gold colored chalk pigment from WoodUbend together.

Once I had them mixed together I then painted it onto the lantern.

You’ll place the glass vase into the wooden lantern and then add a light. I’m adding a small puck light.

This was very easy to make and I love the different colors showing through the lantern. I hope you’ll get creative and give this lantern a try.

You have so many cute ideas Barb. My daughter asked me to make her a tree of life so that’s my next project. I made mine like a weeping birch but she wants a regulars tree so I am off to the $ store. Thanks Barb!
