If your following The Shabby Tree then you already know that I keep trees up in my home all year long. I decorate trees for all holidays and seasons. There are so many ways to make your own ornaments but the salt dough ornament has always been one of my favorites.
The supplies you need to make these ornaments are:
1. Flour (I am using whole wheat flour)
2. Salt
3. Measuring cup
4. Water
5. Cookie cutters
6. Rolling pin
7. Bowl
You will first need to add 2 cups of flour to your bowl.
I then add 1 cup of salt.
You will want to make sure to mix your flour and salt together before adding the water.
I usually add 1 cup of warm water. You will want to add the water slowly to your mixture. It might require the whole cup of water or a little less. I add a little water at a time and keep mixing.
As you mix you will know how much water you need to add. You want a good dough consistency that you can roll out.
I put a little flour on my counter top before rolling out my dough.
I am placing a doily over my dough as I roll it out.
This will give your dough a beautiful lace imprint.
You can use a variety of cookie cutters to cut out your shapes.
You will place them on a cookie sheet and bake at 225 degrees for at least 30 minutes. I also used a toothpick to make holes in my ornaments before baking. The holes are so that you can tie some string onto the ornament for hanging.
When they are done baking you will want to let them cool on a baking rack. I then took them outside to spray polyurethane on them.
You can decorate these in a variety of ways. I like to use Elmer’s glue around the edges and add glitter.
You can also decoupage printed napkins onto them.
It is easier to place your hanger onto the ornament before decoupaging napkin on.
I placed a piece of twine through the hole of the ornament and looped it through. I then traced my ornament onto the napkin and cut it out.
I am brushing Elmer’s glue over the top of my ornament and then adding napkin. I will then add another coat of Elmer’s glue over the napkin.
You can add some glitter for a touch of sparkle.
You can create ornaments for all holidays using this recipe and a variety of cookie cutters.
