I love decorating my porch and especially around my front door. I wanted something that I can keep up all year long. I like to keep a basic greenery around my door and I knew I wanted to make something with twine. I decided a star with twine would be a great item for all year long. This is a very easy DIY and does not require a lot of supplies.
The supplies you will need are:
1. Wire hangers (you will need 3 for one star)
2. Twine
3. Wire cutters
4. Scissors
5. Spray paint (this is optional)
The first thing I did was spray paint my hangers. I want my hangers to match the shade of my twine. This is an optional step.
Once my hangers are dry I then begin to form my star.
Place the first hanger down like this. You will then place the second hanger.
You should have the two points overlapping at top.
I then placed the third hanger like this on top of the previous two.
I am going to cut the hook of the third hanger off right where my finger is pointing to.
Once I cut the hook I will secure the ends together with a piece of twine.
I then took some twine and secured a few of the areas where the hangers overlapped.
Once your star is formed and secured together it is time to wrap your twine.
You will want to tie a knot for your starting point.
You will then just start wrapping in all directions. Make sure to keep cross crossing in all directions.
You will wrap your star according to how much twine you want wrapped around it. My stars are not completely covered.
You can see thru my star here and there. When you get done you will need to take your end piece and tie a knot.
I took the end and brought it up through the wire and knotted it.
I hope you all give this a try. It is a very easy DIY and they look amazing around my front door.

Beautiful Barb, this has been in my Shabby Tree book a while. I think I’ll attempt it today. Much love from Texas! ❤
What a great idea, Can you even buy the wire hangers though?
I love this idea. Iam definitely doing some of these for my porch and I will be adding lights too. I might even try doing one for the house and putting some Christmas sprigs and bells on them🎄☃️🎅⭐💯❣️
I love stars and this looks like an easy way to make them and a few lights and it will be perfect for me. Thank you
Like others am frustrated that the jute keeps sliding off, and if you pull too tight it changes the shape of the star. Any suggestions I want to make these as gifts. I did not paint the hangers as our dry cleaner use bronze colored ones. Do you think that could be it?
Barb this is so stinking cute. Thank you for sharing this project. I love your up beat attitude your so caring for others. I love your pray tree and the wall you created it’s like wow ,I wish people could follow your lead and resize life is to short to be mean all the time. Keep up the good work
Cool. It looks kinda beachy and moreso like a starfish
I dont know where you get the time to do ALL that you do. BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have never been a crafter and you are inspiring me every day to think about things I can do. And following up with this blog makes it so much easier for me to go step by step. I do love your energy! And I have to say that star is stinking!
What twine did you use? Please give us the name and where it was purchased. So many types of twine.
Thank you. Love The Shabby Tree. Watch every day! Do many of your crafts!

I love the star! The directions make it look so easy. The star would look good covered in small tinsel or lace ribbon too. So happy I stumbled across you and your sisters. I love all the beautiful crafts you do.
I was going through and this star is simply amazing!!! Going to try and make it thank you for all your ideas and helping people who have a tough time getting out by sending boxes 📦 so they can craft, which is a great stress reliever your an angel in disguise 👼

i like the star, I will make it along with the tree .
Help – How do you keep the twine from sliding of the hanger?
Barb, I love all your creative ideas, I love the Snowflake with hangers, my mom had two large trees in living room , one in the kitchen and dining room. Her and dads bedroom. Along with the restroom. My sister and I shared a room, she is seven years older, we each had a three foot tree to decorate and display how we wanted. I always made a village of Victorian homes and churches. Carolers and lampposts. Lights everywhere. It was wonderful. Mom passed in 2010 and dad passed 2012. Unfortunately my husband passed in 2013. I have some of mom and dads ashes under my white tree with pink lights. My husband is in the dining room by a picture of a church. My aunt is also near her curio cabinet. I feel protected by their spirits. So I really enjoy Christmas in July. I drive a school bus, member of our VFD women’s auxiliary, Relief Society through Church ,and attend an art class. So I have many gifts to make for all. I thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas.
I made the star for the 4th of July. The front of my house is red, white and blue. I first strung lights inside then wrapped the twine. It came out beautiful.
Luv it😎☕😊🐞
Has anyone made this 1star using anything other than twine for a wrap? If so can you post a photo?
I was wondering if this would be a good candidate for a grave deco using a holiday garland (green or tinsel) and add a pick/ornament/bow . It could be hung or attached to any type of cemetery fixture used to be pushed in the ground? Feedback appreciated.
This is a great way to use up wire hangers! Awesome tutorial.
Barbara, is there a reason you cannot use plastic hangers for this project? You can cut the extra hook off with a knife that you heat over a flame.❤

I made the star you showed with the skewers from the dollar tree. I absolutely love your energy!
Lois,
Your star looks incredible!!
Thought this idea would be a little tricky but it is very easy as I followed the instructions. I like the way you displayed it on your front door. And your right about leaving it on your front door all Summer.
Barb, just finished making 6 stars, I have 2 wrapped in jute and I am spraying them white and putting twinkle light in them and then I will attach them to flay pallets that I painted by myself and my 2 sisters, I have too get the twinkle lights, I will attach them to the flag and post a picture. Hope you are doing well, love seeing the kids on your videos. Your videos keep my spirits lifted especially when I watch in the evening. It does get lonely since my husband passed away. You make us feel like we are part of the Shabby Tree family and that we get to know you. I don’t every feel that you are making goof ups, that is just part of the experience and keeping it real. You do make a difference in people’s lives. I have always made different items, learned how to sew at an early age. Making limes and lemons for a dough bowl and trying to find some lemon payer so that I can put on something. You are a shinning light in your followers eyes and I would dare anyone to say differently. Love being part of The Shabby Tree family.
Can you shoW pictures?
I just love it! Wish I could go to dollar tree .i need greenery .
Simple and perfect..💜
Maybe try a little hot glue to get you started 🤷♀️❤
I found this DYI very difficult as I think many did my twine keep slipping of the hanger but I was not going to quit finally after many try’s and just going with it I finished it I posted it on crafting with the shabby tree and many said it looked like a starfish Lol …. after my frustration it really was a fun craft but a little more difficult than I thought❤️ I just love crafting with the group it puts a little bit of sain into my insane world 🥰
Janet,
Thank you so much for following the shabby tree! Some crafts are harder than others. I am sorry that it took me a little to respond and approve your comment.
I can’t figure out how to do my star with the Jude wrote on the keeps all of the ends of my hanger and I can’t find the video on how to do it
I have tried so many of your ideas and I love them all. So many to do and I am playing catch up.
I absolutely love this star. I have never made one but you make things easy to understand and so enjoyable. Your a wonderful spirit. Thank you and God bless you and your beautiful family.

Being you. ❤️👏👏
Barb, I was wondering where you got your twine from. Any suggestions or a link to purchase?
Stars look so great!
Barb this are wonderful. I watched you yesterday, but the instructions on your blog are so helpful. Thank you for your time and inspiration. Today I drove down to Greenville, SC & went to Mighty Dollar. It is huge!!! Picked up a few things to use in my crafting. That store had tons of scrapbooking supplies. Maybe you can take a trip over. Thank you again. Stay safe.
I love stars so this DIY is right up my alley. Love your front porch I need to try and fix up my porch. I have a porch that has all sliders for doors with screens on each. Like being outside if you open them all. It’s warm in winter and cool in summer.I have a lot of stars already on that porch but would like to do something like you have with Garland and Stars. Love love!
How do I find a craft that you did? I have searched your website and it says beehive not found. Looking through the emails I have seen some but they do not include the directions for making the bed hive. Please help.
Florence,
The beehive sadly was not made into a blog post. It is however on my Facebook!
I can’t wait to make this‼️ I am totally and utterly inspired. THANK YOU😊
I just love it ❣️
Can you show more pictures of how you decorated using them?
So easy.love it❤❤❤
You have the cutest ideas! And so easy and inexpensive! Thank you for sharing!!
I tried 3 times
3 different jute
Could not get it to gather around like u did
I would have had to hot glue it
Dont know what I did wrong
Love this I’m going to get a try. Now I know why I saved those hangers Love Shabby Tree
I think I can do this and it will be something I can give to my girlfriends the next time we get together. They are both good at crafts but not me.
Hello and so happy to find you !!!
I have done this and I spray it with a clear coat. In the past if I put it anywhere it can get wet the twine or jute seems to mold or turn black if outside.
Love this idea!❤🎄❤
