Summer is here and I seem to find myself working hard in my yard. After a full day of trimming shrubs and planting flowers I like to go into my house to take a hot bath and relax.

After trimming my tall trees I seem to always have an aching neck and I find that a heating pad always seems to help. I decided to get creative and try making a heating pad.

The supplies you will need are:

1. A long sock

2. Rice

3. Essential oil (this is optional)

4. Scissors

5. Needle and thread

6. Ribbons

7. Canning jar ring

The first thing I did was cut the tip of my sock off. I didn’t want to see the writing on the tip of the sock so I cut it off. This is totally an optional step. You can leave the sock as is and just begin filling with the rice.

If you do cut the tip of the sock off then you will need to sew it shut.

I’m folding the ends in and then sewing it shut. I sew this across twice to be sure that it won’t open up.

You will need to bring the open end of the sock up through the mason jar ring.

Fold the ends of the sock over the mason jar ring . This will now hold your sock open so that you can pour in the rice.

I am adding a few drops of essential oil to my rice. I am using a lavender scent and I am adding about 10 drops to each cup. How much essential oil or how much rice will depend on how big the sock is your using.

I am adding about 4 cups of rice to this sock.

Once your sock is full you will need to knot the end off. I am using a mixture of ribbons to knot it off.

You will want to pop these in the microwave for just a few seconds at a time. I will usually do 40 seconds and take it out and mix it up and do another 40 seconds. You will do this until it is as warm as you want it.

This is an amazing item to make for yourself or to give a friend. I use this a lot in the evening to sooth my achy neck after a long day of working in the yard. I hope you enjoy this DIY and give it a try!
